He Is the Bread of Life

If Jesus says he is the “bread of life.” Then why is it killing us to eat it?
If you are like me, you might be wondering, " Why am I always hungry? Why can I never get better? Why is food my enemy? Well, I am here to tell you. Food isn’t the problem. The way we eat it is.
Jesus gives us 7 I AM statements in the Gospel of John. The first one he ever states is that “He is the bread of life.”

Recently, however, I was introduced to another statement. One from the world. It quotes “bread is dead.” The goal is to encourage people to avoid gluten.
If we truly believe what Jesus says, that he is the bread of life, and as such, this food is good for our bodies. Then why is it that modern-day loafs are killing people? Why would Jesus ever compare himself to something that isn’t sustainable for life?
I have wrestled with those questions since I was 9 years old and diagnosed with a gluten intolerance. In many ways, I just wanted to know if I was hurting my faith by eating gluten-free. I would think to myself, “Maybe bread is good for me, and I am just too broken or too afraid to enjoy it.” What I didn’t know was that it would take me 17 years to find the solution to my problem.
What I learned. Gluten isn’t the problem. The way we have taken care of it is. Wheat has been modified for convenience, causing chronic health issues since its inception.
You know what else I learned? Being “gluten-free” or carb-free is actually hurting more than helping.
As someone who has had chronic health issues since I was little. You can have confidence that I have tried almost everything to help myself feel better. Yet, nothing ever worked. I changed my diet, did my protocols, and went to the church for miraculous healing. But I stayed the same. A sick, confused, and hurting little girl. It wasn’t until I got pregnant with my daughter that I said “enough is enough” and took my health into my own hands.
So with the help of the Holy Spirit. I went on a research frenzy. I learned about the stomach, liver, and pancreas and how they all play a role in our health. I learned about our diet and why processed foods are slowly killing us. But most importantly. I learned about bread. Real, delicious, melt-in-your-mouth bread. Let me tell you. It brought me back to life. Here is why!
The original wheat grain holds 40 of the 45 vital nutrients we need as humans. Not only that, one piece alone can meet the recommended FDA-approved dose of many vitamins and minerals.
Take a second. Let that sink in. Bread is a source of almost everything we need.
I also learned that ancient wheat is a complete protein and a perfect source of healthy carbohydrates, which kinda seems like God intended for us to get quality energy from it.
Lastly, I learned that before the 1820s, people would mill their own flour at home before using it. So what changed? How did bread go from a source of life to a source of death?
Well, during the 1820s, people were busy. So mass production mills took the place of home-made ones, and to make sure the flour didn’t go bad. They removed the wheat germ and the wheat bran. Guess where the nutrients live… yep—the wheat germ. The good news was that people could now store flour on their shelf for years without it spoiling—the bad news was that. People started to get sick from nutrient deficiencies. So, what do grain mills do? They added 6 synthetic nutrients back in. That way, they could still make a profit on flour by selling the wheat germ to farms and the rest to us. It helped a bit for those who weren’t allergic to the synthetic vitamins. However, it didn’t stop there. Once they added the vitamins, the flour turned yellow. So what do they do? They bleached it. That’s right. That is where bleach-enriched flour comes from. So, for nearly 200 years, we have been using flour that isn’t truly flour. It’s sugar and protein, and is no longer a rich source of nutrients for our bodies.
Fun fact: they later decided to add extra gluten strands to make bread fluffier with less
product. So that we can get more value for our dollar, oh, and don’t even get me started on Glyphosate. That needs its own post.
So, the truth is that our processed genetically modified food is what’s wrong. Not gluten, not wheat, and certainly not bread.
In fact, the Bible encourages us to eat a whole-grain diet, which provides the necessary nutrients we need to live with vitality and balance.
Bread was never the enemy. The way we manipulated it for our own gain is. As a result, we stay hungry. We get sicker, and we can never understand why there is no healing anymore. Here is what I recommend.
They are called Ancient grains. Wheat berries that have never been touched by hybridization or genetic modification. Instead, they have been preserved and grown by those who know the value of clean, whole foods. There are five specific types of wheat grown in America that can be used as traditional wheat.
Note that true wheat flour starts to lose nutrients 12 hours after milling. Thus, the best way to absorb what you need is to use only what you need for the recipe at hand. If that is not possible. I encourage you to refrigerate your flour to slow the breakdown of the granules.
Khorasan originated in Mesopotamia and can be traced back to Noah’s Ark!
Einkorn is the mother of wheat. This is the wheat that modernized brands have been made from. It is the oldest wheat found.
Emmer, the Italian wheat known as Farro or Farro Media.
Rye is from Eastern and Central Europe. It comes from grass.
Spelt is the ancient wheat from Roman times. Called Farro Grande.
These wheat types are rich in life. They are what we like to call nutrient-dense. This makes you stay fuller longer and gives your body what it needs to support healing, energy to function, and so much more.
Jesus did not stutter when He said, "I am the bread of life." He meant to use it as an analogy that the people of His time would understand. Because to them, bread was life. Without it, they would miss a major food source. To us now. We may have hurdles to overcome to eat a blessed and balanced meal. It will be time-consuming and difficult; however, I know that my family and I will never go back to eating bread the way we did. Lifeless and tasteless.
What do you say? Will you join us?
“This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.””
John 6:58 ESV
